Holocaust The Holocaust and People Essay
Holocaust The Holocaust and People Essay Holocaust: The Holocaust and People Essay How Could the Holocaust Happen? When learning about the holocaust you learn about the horror the Jews faced, the atrocities that occurred, and who committed the atrocities. But one aspect of the holocaust is not often explained, not for a lack of care, but because it is a question that cannot be easily answered or summed up. That question is "How could this happen?". We often portray the Nazis as typical movie villains, not just doing evil things for their own profit, but doing evil things for the sake of being evil. We portray them as these larger than life monsters that were beyond being compassionate and incapable of love. But we know this is obviously untrue. These people were mere humans, they could be my descendents, they could be yours. The questions that Elie Wiesel's book Night often implies is what are the conditions of human culture that manifest themselves into situations like the Holocaust, Armenian Genocide, or even modern genocides such as the situation in Rwanda in t he mid 90's? Memoirs of genocides such as Night are extremely important because they bring awareness to the genocide itself, but also can give clues to what were the causes of the atrocities like The Holocaust. To begin the process of answering the question of "How could this happen?" one must first ask themselves whether human kind is inherently evil or not. I believe that humans are not naturally evil. This has been proven throughout time that different people's can get along. I do not think that humans "want" to hate anyone else. With that assumption, the next question is why do some groups of people hate others then? While humans are not naturally hateful, we are greedy and do want resources for ourselves. When we see a threat to our way of life from another group of people who can potentially harm us, often times violence ensues. A perfect example of this is the Jewish Holocaust. German Jews typically kept to themselves and made themselves an easy target to be considered "the enemy". Germany was in a very tough time after WW1 and Hitler and the Nazis found a perfect enemy to unify the Germans against. The Nazis saw Jews as a threat and with the use of propaganda, found a way to turn the entire nation against the Jews. Once the nation had identified its enemy, it was easy to get the populous to go along with the extermination or turn a blind eye. They also had to begin the exterminations without massive Jewish revolt, which was done through deception and secretive actions. Wiesel talks about how the Jews of Sighet were told only the Jews of Budapest would be deported, which was obviously a lie. Then, in order to keep the Jews calm, they were deported in small chunks. Nobody notices if a small amount of the population is taken, but it quickly adds up until no one is left. Even the Jews were resistant to the idea that the Nazis could be so evil. "Annihilate an entire people? Wipe out a population dispersed throughout so many nations? So many millions of peo ple! By what means? In the middle of the twentieth century!"1 No one fathomed that those trains led to death camps and they had no reason to believe they did. Nobody that ever went to those death camps left alive to tell the tale. This was a time before the internet and cell phones, people could not quickly and effectively communicate which left tons of Jews vulnerable to being deported to the death camps without any prior knowledge. Mass lies and deception are what allowed a genocide to happen in front of the world and have nobody notice. While I believe the times of mass genocide are coming to an end, one must look at the genocides that occurred after the

Why Your Attitude is More Important Than Your Intelligence
Why Your Attitude is More Important Than Your Intelligence Sometimes it seems like the most successful people must be the smartest ones in the room- after all, how else would they have achieved that level? And how can you compete if youââ¬â¢re not a double major in French and biology at an Ivy League school, with a minor in rocket science? The reality is that those traditional hallmarks of intelligence and success donââ¬â¢t mean as much to your career as you might think (no offense to you French-speaking biologists in Harvard sweatshirts). In reality, your IQ may not mean as much to your career trajectory as the motivation and attitude you bring to your job.Itââ¬â¢s All a Mind GameIn a Stanford study, psychologist Carol Dweck found that career success was tied more closely to an employeeââ¬â¢s mindset over his or her IQ. She found that employees tended to fall into one of two mindsets: ââ¬Å"fixedâ⬠and ââ¬Å"growth.â⬠People with fixed mindsets believe that your self is set, and wonââ¬â¢t be changed by the everyda y work experience. Those with fixed mindsets tend to have problems with obstacles or challenges, regardless of their IQ.Conversely, people with growth mindsets see challenges as learning opportunities, and believe they can grow with each obstacle they navigate. These growth-minded people tend to outperform their fixed peers, no matter whose base IQ was higher. How You Can AdaptSo how can you make this work for you? In short, start thinking like a growth mindset-haver, if you donââ¬â¢t already. The best way to do this is start approaching your professional challenges (both big and small) in a more productive way. When presented with an obstacle, try these strategies to change your mindset.1. Donââ¬â¢t panic. You made a mistake? Someone just handed you a huge task, with a tight deadline? Someone else didnââ¬â¢t do something they should have? Itââ¬â¢s important not to freeze, and throw your hands up in despair.2. Be proactive.Ask questions about next steps if youââ¬â¢re un clear about what to do. Think about what you can do in the short term, and what your plan is for the long term, then take concrete steps to achieve that particular goal. After youââ¬â¢re past the challenge or obstacle, take time to think about what led to the situation, what you did to resolve it, and what you would do if it happened again.3. Learn from it.Maybe you had an issue because you didnââ¬â¢t have a certain kind of skill. Or maybe someone else has expertise you need to be better at your job. Whatever can help you expand your horizons after youââ¬â¢ve dealt with the obstacle, take it as an opportunity to squirrel away knowledge for the future, or set mini goals for yourself in the short term to be better.Like an optimist, someone with a growth mindset tries to see around obstacles- what they can do in the short term, and what they can take from the situation. Giving up in the face of adversity makes you rigid, and unable to deal with curve balls. And what is profess ional life, if not a series of curve balls thrown directly at you?The most important thing is to be flexible and willing to adapt. You donââ¬â¢t need to be the person with the highest test scores, but if youââ¬â¢re the one whoââ¬â¢s most willing to try (and even fail) in the interest of becoming smarter and more experienced, IQ is nothing but a number.

The Educational Experience Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
The Educational Experience - Essay Example During her high school days, she had a lot of chores to perform at home after school and this did not give her a chance to study. She was the only lady in her family and therefore she had to assist her mother with the cooking after school after completing other tasks like washing the kitchen utensils and fetching water for use for the following day. Because her task burden, she could not compete well with her male counterparts. That made her be always last in her class, but the trend changed while in college. In college, she had all the time to do her personal studies and the many tasks that she used to perform during her high school days were greatly reduced. According to the two authors that is Adrienne Rich and John Tierney, the aspect of disparate opportunities for both the gender causes the difference in their education as in the situation of Dawn Riley. In her school days, her performance was dismal and that was due to the numerous chores that she used to perform after school r eprieving her chance to study. Educational history and choices The high school educational history of my friend provides a perfect platform to complement on the argument of the Adrienne Rich. Her history will support the argument of Adrienne Rich about women not receiving an equal opportunity in education (Adrienne 2). According to this author, most of the male view the female students as prey and this stereotype mind has greatly affected women students. The female, on the other hand, has also been made to believe that their assertive behavior might cause them of their marriages and this belief has made the female students failures. A lot of humiliation and self-doubt have always engulfed the minds of the female students because of the various mind raping that has been implanted in them by the male students (Adrienne 6). The choices between the two genders when it comes to professionalism also tend to support the arguments of the authors about choices. Most of the courses which are considered difficult have very few female students, unlike the male students who have the numbers in all courses. The authors were right when they said that the educational choices between the two genders are also different. The element of dividing issues to worry about has also been pinpointed by the authors to be a determinant of the educational differences between the two genders. This line of argument according to my opinion is right because female students have many things to worry about as compared to their male counterparts. For purposes of equality in education then the female and the male students should be given equal opportunity. Overburdening the female student with a lot of chores after school always reprieve them the chance to properly focus on their studies. The male students should also shun from their stereotype mindset of viewing the female students as preys. The aspect of considering the female students as preys always make them close up in terms of their particip ation in class related aspects (Adrienne 12). The author went further and started the difference that exists between the female and the male even at the workplace caused by the school life of the two genders (Adrienne 12). The female students also need to put away the intellectual self-doubt as this would cause them a lot in terms of their academic carriers.Ã Ã Ã

Alleviating Problems in Police Agencies Article
Alleviating Problems in Police Agencies - Article Example My discussion explores the position vis a vis the two great democratic nations which have led the world in their quest for human rights and whose legal and political systems are deemed to be the envy of the world. It has often been said that the modern American Constitution along with the Declaration of Independence is a result of Lockean Ideals of Liberalism(that is John Locke's Concepts based on liberty, freedom, instituting government, and the right to alter that government.).However proponents of the heavy influence of British/European ideals (Gary Wills for example) have argued that a much more important role in this regard has been played by Scottish philosophers ,the Dutch and more importantly Britain.(Kavka 1986:45). According to Sheldon the Declaration of Rights reflects "three dominant ideologies present during the American revolution and the founding of the American republic. These political philosophies were British liberalismClassical Republicanismand Christianity," (Sheldon: 16). It can be seen that the Western Ideals of Government and Democracy are directly a result of the way ancient Roman and European philosophers sought to understand the human nature by the concept of the "state of nature." (Kavka 1986:87).This theory sought to look at human beings after stripping them of all their societal attributes, in the hope of uncovering their common characteristics.(Jean 1986:46) Through this theory they hoped to discover an effective theory of Government. For Hobbes man is purely motivated by self interest and in his notion of the state of nature all humans are competing with each other .(Jean 1986:58).For Locke of the state of nature reveals the obligations of humans to each other in terms of natural rights to life, liberty and property. In contrast for Rousseau in line with the tradition of the modern natural law there was a need to answer the "challenge of skepticism" and this would require a step by step approach to human nature based on self interest. (Jean 1986:69).For Hobbes men are politically obligated to each other based on their own selfish interests which is their state of nature. The notion of the state of nature assumes that it is each man for him out there and every man is vulnerable. This he shows is not a desirable "state" to be in at all and therefore there is a need of an invisible assurance of security. For him this state of "

The genesis of secrecy by Frank Kermode
Biblical scholarship and the gospels can be useful examples for Kermode because these provide scholarly quality and discipline of the best biblical study and can set a high enough standard that can be exemplary to all. An indispensable instrument of survival in this world is the power to make interpretations. According to Kermode, in all the works of interpretation, there are insiders and outsiders, the former having or professing to have, immediate access to the mystery, the latter randomly scattered across space and time and excluded from the elect who mistrust or despise their unauthorized divinations, which may indeed, for all the delight they give, without absolute value. From my understanding, he deems this important since much of what is written is susceptible to many interpretations. Thus the power to make interpretations has been dubbed by the author as an indispensable instrument of survival. Hermes is the patron of thieves, merchants and travelers, of heralds and their kerygma. He has been described as cunning and occasionally violent. He is also the patron of interpreters and since Kermode is an interpreter himself, Hermes is important in his profession. Hermes is, after all, considered as the god of going between ââ¬âbetween the dead and the living, between the latent and the manifest. Hermeneutics is thus described as the rules of the art of interpretation and its philosophy. It has been thought by some as the most serious of philosophical inquiry; as a means whereby they effect a necessary subversion of the old metaphysics. It covers a range of activity from plain proclamation of sense to oracular intimations. The biblical passage quoted by the author is from the Gospel of Mark (4:11-12) to wit: Jesus said, ââ¬Å"To you has been given the secret of God, but for those outside everything is in parables; so that they may indeed see but no perceive, and may indeed hear but no understand; lest they should turn again, and be forgiven.â⬠This passage was included by the author because he needed to point out that a written work is susceptible to various interpretations. He wanted to point out that it is only those who already know the mysteries ââ¬â what the stories really mean ââ¬â can discover what the stories really mean. Carnal reading is that which is based on simple primary senses. These are readers who try to take the literary piece in their literal concept. In the story of Party going, the author wanted to stress the need to rely more on spiritual reading rather than carnal reading. He wanted to emphasize that we need to perceive and understand the story before us to achieve full comprehension. Hina was used by Mark to refer to ââ¬Å"so thatâ⬠while hoti was used by Matthew as ââ¬Å"becauseâ⬠. The change by Matthew involved a different grammar where Matthew replaces Marksââ¬â¢ subjective into an indicative. The parable of the Good Samaritan has been interpreted in many ways ââ¬âthe most common of which is to showcase who or what a real neighbor is. And by the standards of the parable, it is that person who helps those in need. It was also referred to the fall of man whereby Adam is the traveler who has decided to leave Paradise and the Good Samaritan is Christ who saved him. Narratives are obscure because it allows us to interpret these in a manner we see fit. The parables are a perfect example in the sense that they allow us to learn something based on our own understanding or perception of a story vis-à -vis the real interpretation of the text.

Taking a Closer Look at Behaviorists Essay - 1963 Words
Psychology is a science that focuses primarily on the study of the mind, but it can also be the study of behavior. ââ¬Å"Behaviorism is a worldview that assumes a learner is essentially passive, responding to environmental stimuli. The learner starts off as a clean slate and behavior is shaped through positive reinforcement or negative reinforcement. Both positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement increase the probability that the antecedent behavior will happen again. The study of only behavior in Psychology is called Behaviorism. The Psychologists who study the school of Behaviorism go by the title of Behaviorists or Behavioral Psychologists. Behaviorists have their own theories and principles that they follow in their study.â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Pavlov sounded a bell when a group of dogs were eating. Watson and Rosalie Rayner, a graduate student, conducted an experiment called Albert B on a nine month old boy named Albert. In the Albert B experiment, Watson and Rayner showed Albert many white objects including a white rabbit. Watson and Rayner gave Albert the white rabbit again, but this time they hit a metal pipe with a hammer. The loud noise made Albert cry. They continued this process until the sight of the white rabbit, without the noise of the pipe, made Albert cry. This proved that emotions can be altered by changing an organisms behavior. John Broadus Watson was born in Greenville, South Carolina on January 9, 1878. Watson grew up in a horrible home. Watsonââ¬â¢s father cheated on his mother, and his terrible home life led him to be a trouble child. When Watson was in school, he would harass the African Am erican children that went there with him. Watson was also arrested twice for violent behavior.
